Dog and Cat CT Machine: Frequently Asked Questions

Cat preparing for a CT Scan

1. What is the CT machine used for in pets?

Our CT machine is designed to provide detailed, high-quality imaging of your pet’s skull and limbs. This imaging helps our veterinarians diagnose and treat various conditions like bone fractures, tumors, or other skeletal issues. It’s a non-invasive procedure that allows us to get a clear view of internal structures.

2. What conditions are best diagnosed with CT imaging?

CT imaging is ideal for:

  • Skull imaging: Diagnosing head trauma, tumors, sinus issues, or abnormalities in the skull and brain.
  • Limb imaging: Detecting fractures, joint abnormalities, bone infections, and other skeletal issues. It’s especially useful when a standard X-ray isn’t detailed enough to provide a clear diagnosis.
  • The type of CT we currently have does not offer the detailed imaging required for chest and abdominal scans.

3. How is the CT scan performed on my pet?

The CT scan is quick and non-invasive. Your pet will be placed on the imaging table, and they will need to be still during the scan. In most cases, your pet will be under mild sedation or anesthesia to ensure they remain calm and still, ensuring clear, high-quality images.

4. Is the procedure safe for my pet?

Yes, the CT scan is a safe procedure. We use the lowest radiation dose possible and monitor your pet closely throughout the process. Anesthesia or sedation is administered under the supervision of our trained veterinary team to ensure your pet’s safety.

5. Does my pet need to be fasted before the CT scan?

In most cases, we recommend that your pet be fasted for at least 12 hours before the CT scan if they are going to be sedated or anesthetized. This helps reduce the risk of vomiting during or after sedation. We will provide specific instructions when scheduling the procedure.

6. How long does the CT scan take?

A CT scan will be a drop-off procedure.  Your pet may need time to recover from sedation or anesthesia.  You can expect your pet to be here for a few hours.

7. Will I receive results immediately?

No, results will be sent to a board certified radiologist to fully interpret.  We will discuss the results with you as soon as they are ready, usually in 1-3 days.

We will provide preliminary results right after the scan, but full interpretation of the images may take a little longer. The images will be reviewed by our veterinary radiologists, and we will discuss the results with you as soon as they are available.

8. Can I be with my pet during the CT scan?

Unfortunately, due to safety protocols, owners cannot be present. Our team will make sure your pet is well cared for throughout the procedure.

9. What should I do if my pet is anxious or stressed about the procedure?

If your pet has anxiety or stress around vet visits, please let us know when scheduling. We can discuss options for pre-sedation or calming measures to help your pet feel more comfortable.

10. Will my pet need follow-up care after the CT scan?

After the scan, your pet may require some recovery time depending on the sedation or anesthesia used. We will provide detailed aftercare instructions, and your vet will discuss any further treatment or management options based on the scan results.

11. How much does a CT scan for my pet cost?

The cost varies depending on the complexity of the scan and the sedation required. Please contact our reception team for an estimate, and we’ll provide more detailed pricing information based on your pet’s needs.
