Scratching the Surface: Understanding Dog Allergies

Does your dog scratch, lick, or chew at their paws, ears, or skin a little too much? Occasional itchiness is normal, but when it becomes constant, it may point to something more: allergies.

During the month of August, the AVMA is highlighting Itchy Pet Awareness, and we want to share the most common culprits behind those pesky itches: food allergies and environmental allergies. Read on to learn more about different types of Dog Allergies.

Food Allergies

Food allergies happen when a pet’s immune system reacts to a specific ingredient, usually a protein like chicken, beef, dairy, or soy.

Signs of food allergies in pets may include:

  • Constant itching, especially on paws and ears
  • Recurring ear infections
  • Digestive upset such as vomiting or diarrhea

The gold standard for diagnosing food allergies is a diet trial. This involves feeding a prescription hydrolyzed or novel protein diet for 8 to 12 weeks with no treats, table scraps, or flavored medications allowed. If your pet improves, then flares up again when old food is reintroduced, you have found the culprit.

Environmental Allergies

Common signs include:

  • Licking or chewing at feet and belly
  • Red, inflamed skin
  • Chronic ear infections
  • A musty odor from skin or ears due to secondary infections

Environmental allergies, also called atopy, are usually diagnosed after ruling out food allergies and parasites.

Treatment and Relief for Dog Allergies

The good news is that there are many options to bring comfort back to itchy pets. Depending on the cause, our veterinarians may recommend:

  • Prescription diets for food allergies
  • Medications such as Apoquel® or Cytopoint® for itch control
  • Topical therapies like medicated shampoos
  • Infection control for secondary skin or ear issues
  • Year-round flea prevention, since fleas make every allergy worse
